Braces for All Ages in Franklin, TN
We are proud to provide orthodontic care to children, as well as adults. Your teeth are in good hands with Dr. Foster, who has applied straight wire braces for more than 20 years.
What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a dental practice that specializes in the alignment of teeth. The number one solution to crowded or crooked teeth is braces. Using wires and brackets, Dr. Foster applies tension to realign permanent teeth. We offer braces to fix an abnormal bite or for cosmetic reasons. Orthodontic treatment can aid in the quest for a healthier mouth. It is important to consult the dentist for any concerns about your bite. Not correcting an odd bite can result in:
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Tooth loss
- Issues with the jaw including TMJ
- Problems speaking or chewing
- Increased wear to tooth enamel
Your Child’s Smile
We understand you want to provide your child with a lifetime of good health in addition to an amazing smile. Dr. Foster has extensive experience providing children and teens with a chance at a new smile through traditional fixed orthodontics.
While we see children of all ages, we recommend bringing those between 10 and 14 years old in for an orthodontics consultation. This age range is the best for braces since the head and mouth are still developing and guiding that development is remarkably easier. Dr. Foster and his team understand that your child may have mixed feelings about wearing braces. Together with parents, we can help your child understand the long-term benefits of a healthy, beautiful smile in order to make them an active participant in their oral health.
Braces are not only for children and teenagers. Increasingly, more adults are turning to braces to fix problems with crooked teeth, spacing, and abnormal bites that may have been left untreated when they were younger. As more and more adults become aware of the impact a straight, attractive smile can make on their social, romantic, and professional interactions, the number of adults seeking orthodontic therapy has grown rapidly.
We invite you to browse through some frequently asked questions our patients have about orthodontics. If you don’t find your particular question here, feel free to call our office or schedule a consultation with Dr. Foster:
Are braces right for you? Do you think you need braces?
- If you have concerns with the alignment of your smile, overlapping teeth, an overbite or underbite, you may need braces. Feel free to discuss these issues with Dr. Foster at your next visit.
Will it hurt?
- Braces feel different for everyone. You may initially feel discomfort or soreness while adjusting to having something in your mouth and after you go in to have your wires tightened periodically. Teeth and jaws may feel slightly sore after tightening occurs.
How long will I have to wear the braces?
The length of time you will be required to wear braces depends on your individual condition. Factors include:
- How old you are
- How your teeth are positioned
- How bad your bite is
Most patients can count on wearing full braces between 12 and 24 months.
Once the braces are off, you will need to wear a retainer to maintain your beautiful new smile.
Are there restrictions on what I can eat with braces?
The acids and plaque from sugary foods can cause tooth decay and gum disease. We recommend that you stay away from sweets such as:
- Sticky foods
In addition, dental hygiene while wearing braces requires special attention. Avoid chewing on ice, thumb sucking, and lip biting.
